
On May 27, 1851 President Millard Fillmore made the boldest move of his auspicious presidency after coming into the office as a result of President Zachary Taylor’s untimely death. While presiding over the Senate, President Fillmore introduced to the Senate the Moravia High School varsity basketball team who had recently won the New York State high school basketball championship; they were made honorary pages for the day. While not a total surprise, this move was largely unexpected by the team and changed the tone of the entire day’s session.
