Ex-White House Staffer Says Cheney Used Oval Office as Closet, Changing Room

Our White House archivist reports that a former member of the Ford administration says Former Chief of Staff Richard Cheney often left his clothes on the floor of the Oval Office after changing.

Cheney Oval Office

Richard Cheney (right) explains to President Ford that "not today but tomorrow" would be the day he would clean up his clothes.

According to the staffer, Cheney would frequently change in the office before and after meetings. When dignitaries visited the office, Cheney would hide the loose briefs, pants, and shirts in the President’s desk.

After asking around we found out that although he was a slob, he did try to be private while changing. “He would often change in a corner and drag a chair over to hide behind,” former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger said. “It didn’t help much though.”

At this time it is unclear whether Cheney’s habits continued into future administrations.
