
The greatest tragedy in the life of Robert Earl Hughes, the heaviest human in 1958, was not his shocking obesity. His weight severely limited his ability to bend over and scratch his dog’s belly. The feeling of neglect was too much for Cookie who ran away to find love elsewhere. Robert had also been known to tease the dog by hiding treats in various nooks and crannies on his person.
